Task 1 | History of Chosen Genre (Music Video)

I have chosen the 'pop music' genre for my upcoming music video that I plan to shoot for my A2 portfolio. Pop music began in the United States of Amercia in the 1930's. A great example of pop music from the past is Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra who sang with big swing bands and later became solo stars. During the 1950's, a more louder and exciting version of pop music also emerged known as rock and roll, which were songs mostly surrounding youthful rebellion and teenage love.

Along with music itself, the history of music videos has also developed over time. Music videos are not shot the same way they used to be, or have at least advanced greatly in terms of creativity and technology. Here I will compare a few old music videos to some of the latest ones by some really big singers in the genre that I have chosen to create my music video in:

Shakira - Hips Don't Lie 2009 VS Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do 2017

One of the clear differences between these two videos is the quality. Shakira's video is quite dim and not as high quality and well pixilated as Taylor Swift's video. Another thing I noticed is that Shakira's video is 'simple' in a way, with her singing and dancing and not a lot of things going on at once. There is also minimal to no 'high tech' editing used. Where as in Taylor's video, a lot of special effects etc have been used and there is a lot of editing that can clearly be seen. Her video is also a lot more intense in the sense that it's not as simple as Shakira's where she's just dancing and singing. Taylor's video is telling a story in a different manner which shows how far creativity has also come in the production of music videos. Another difference that can totally tell apart the times that these two videos were made in is the setting. Shakira's setting is extremely simple and realistic where as Taylor's seems to be set in the future and seems extremely technical.

Justin Bieber - Baby 2010 VS Justin Bieber - I'm The One 2017

I'm comparing two music videos by the same artist that were made 7 years apart from one another to show a clear perspective of how an artist and his style can also change with time. In the music video Baby, there is extremely simple editing going on with the backgrounds changing and some other things that back in the day everyone would have thought were really high editing skills. But if you compare his video to his latest one from 2017, you can see a lot of things done differently. The editing is much more fastly paced, the colors are way more vibrant, the camera shots are smoother and the sound is much better. In terms of clothing, there is a lot more skin showed in the 2017 video, along with alcohol and a giant mansion which portrays the life style of the singer now vs then, when it wasn't so 'normal' to show these types of things in music videos where as now it's extremely common.
